about Julia Garry

I am a Canadian-born artist living and practicing on palawa Country in nipaluna (Hobart). I work mainly in acrylic, but also create with glass, textiles, and cyanotype.

I paint intuitively, which means beginning with no planned outcome. I enjoy a tactile approach and often use my bare hands as well as brushes and found objects to apply paint in experimental ways. Many layers of marks and colour build and evolve until a figure or narrative speaks, which I then develop into the finished piece. This process creates a sense of depth and detail that I hope the viewer will spend many hours exploring.

I am self-taught. I grew up in a family of storytellers where creativity was nurtured, and active imaginations encouraged. I love to imbue my works with naive imagery, vibrant colour and a sense of play.

My work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions and is owned in multiple private collections in Australia and internationally.
