The fruit of this tree Mespilus germanica, also called medlar, has been cultivated since Roman times. Before eating the fruit are bletted, a process of softening beyond ripening. The medlar originated in SE Asia and was introduced to Greece around 700 BC, and to Rome about 200 BC. It was an important fruit plant during Roman and medieval times being one of the few fruits available in winter. By the 17th and 18th centuries, it had been superseded by other fruits.
